SC Homeschool Law

Laws for other states can be found here.

Faithful Scholars helps families navigate South Carolina homeschool law. We have a lawyer on retainer with over 20 years of experience interpreting these laws. SC laws are generally aligned with natural homeschooling methods; approaches from other states may need to be formalized to fit SC requirements.

The following is based on Section 59-65-47 of the South Carolina Code of Laws. Parents or guardians may instruct their children at home if they are members of a homeschool association that has at least fifty members and meets the minimum standards approved by the State Department of Education.

Minimum standards (summary)

  • Parent has a high school diploma or GED.
  • Instructional year of at least 180 days.
  • Curriculum includes basic instructional areas: reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies; for grades 7–12 also composition and literature.
  • Educational records maintained by the parent-teacher:
    • Plan book or diary of subjects and activities
    • Portfolio of academic work samples
    • Semi-annual progress report with attendance and individualized documentation
  • By January 30th each year, the association reports the number and grade level of home-schooled children to the respective school districts.
